Mullet fish, whose average length is 13 centimeters, can grow up to 40 centimeters. Red mullet, with an average weight of 50-75 grams, is caught in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. Red mullet is a delicious fish with high economic value.


There are two subspecies of mullet fish:

  • Mullus barbatus barbatus

  • Mullus barbatus ponticus

Its body is flattened from the sides and its head is large and oval compared to its body. Its forehead is vertical, its fins are yellow, and its body is covered with pink-red scales that shed easily. It has two long whiskers on its lower jaw and no teeth. Dorsal fin is colorless or plain colored. Female red mullet fish are 6 cm longer than males at the end of the first 2 years.


Mullet fish are carnivorous and feed on crab fry, small fish, lobsters and worms. During periods when the water temperature rises, they migrate from the depths to the shores. The average lifespan of red mullet fish is 10 years.


Reproduction in mullet fish

Mullet fish, whose ideal breeding temperature is 24 degrees, spawn between April and June. They lay between 15,000 and 100,000 eggs at a depth of 10-25 m in the Azov and Black Sea between May and July. The larvae in the eggs begin to live at the bottom after living pelagic for two months. Red mullet fish grow at the same rate for the first two years, regardless of gender.
